Welcome to all entering our Quaker Meeting House!

If you are new to the way of Friends, this may help you to find your way round, understand what is happening and let you know how to find out more about our faith and beliefs.

Meeting for Worship

Meeting for Worship is held each Sunday at 10.30am and lasts an hour. Coming into the main meeting room you will see chairs set out in a circle with a table in the middle, so that we can see each other as we worship together.  Please sit anywhere you like.  There are no designated seats.  Quaker Meeting for Worship starts as soon as the first person sits down.  Latecomers enter quietly and take their seats.  On the table there are usually flowers and some Bibles, as well as a copy of Quaker Faith and Practice, a red book which contains the collected insights and wisdom of Friends from the early days in 1652 up to our times.  QF&P is revised every twenty years and its contents have an enduring relevance to our lives as Quakers today.

During Meeting for Worship we sit together in silence, which is sometimes broken by spoken ministry.  After an hour an Elder will stand and announce that our time of worship has ended and invite any further thoughts and reflections that those present might like to share but which seemed inappropriate for Ministry.  We call this our 'Afterword'. Following this, Elders will shake hands and this handshake is repeated around the room by everyone.  Meeting has now ended and it is time for notices, news and finally simple refreshments together.  If you are attending for the first time you may be invited to introduce yourself and sign our Visitors’ Book, but neither is obligatory.

Children and young people

If you have children who would like to come with you that is fine - just let us know and we will talk to you about how we can offer an age-appropriate session for them.

Warden

Hartington Grove has a warden who, with the meeting, is responsible for managing the Meeting House, welcoming visitors and dealing with the letting of our rooms during the week.  The warden is available by phone on Cambridge 01223 214438 or at warden@hartingtongrove.org.uk by email.

Finding out more

If you want to know more, you will always be welcome to speak to any Friend, especially in our time together over tea and coffee after Meeting.

A variety of leaflets about all aspects of Quakerism are stocked on the shelf near the front door.  Please feel free to take some with you.

All are welcome to browse or buy copies of current and recent issues of The Friend, the national weekly journal of Britain Yearly Meeting.

We also have a small library at Hartington Grove where books are available to borrow.

Every month we circulate our Hartington Grove Newssheet which lists upcoming events which may be of interest to you.

Please ask any Friend at anytime if we can help further with your enquiries.
